Digital Business Models
What are digital business models, what kinds are there, and why is it important to know this today?
From a Traditional Business to a Digital Model
A website alone is no longer enough. Digital services, hybrid offerings, and platform logic all play a role in how companies attract and retain customers and create new value.
8 Questions for Roger
1. Why do we need digital business models?
The days when a website operated in isolation are over. Today, we need to take a holistic approach to considering how our websites, apps, and other platforms can help us reach existing and new customers—and how we can use digital services to build customer loyalty to our company.
2. What are the benefits or advantages of this business model for the operator and the customer?
It is scalable and can be reduced to virtually zero marginal cost.
3. Until recently, products were sold in local specialty stores. Online distribution involves additional effort. What are the challenges associated with this paradigm shift?
There are many opportunities for hybrid models, provided you understand that customers have long since embraced a hybrid approach.
4. What do I need to consider before starting an online business?
You should get to know and understand your customers very well using the Value Proposition Canvas: How can I deliver even more value digitally while retaining customer loyalty to my business—without being personally or physically involved?.
5. What is a long-tail model?
This allows me to focus on multiple products rather than just a few blockbusters. The Long Tail model takes the opposite approach. Instead of focusing on a single blockbuster product, the guiding principle here is: „Low sales figures for individual products are offset by our vast product range.“.
6. Please give an example of a success story for this type of business model.
The two most successful business models right now are undoubtedly Peloton in the fitness sector and Patreon in the adult entertainment sector. Both companies have managed to make a virtue out of necessity and are experiencing tremendous growth. With Peloton, you buy the equipment—an exercise bike—and then sign up for a subscription to participate in live or recorded classes. On Patreon, you can create a profile and, depending on your content, have your podcast, music, or art sponsored (so-called “supporters” pay monthly contributions). This is making content creation increasingly democratized. The fans decide whether or not to pay for it.
7. Which industries benefit the most from this?
Currently, this applies to the construction and manufacturing sectors—on the one hand because they are well-established and diverse, but also because intermediaries and brokers are increasingly being cut out of the equation. There is tremendous potential here. Sectors such as restaurants, the hotel industry, and events are less well-positioned—likely due to lower margins, even though Airbnb was able to bridge the gap this year with virtual events but still had to lay off some employees.
8. In what direction is the further development of Internet-based models heading?
We’re moving more and more toward hybrid models and models that are independent of time and location—ones that are increasingly „on-demand“ and „platform-based.“ The democratization of data also seems to be on the rise; in Germany, there are already cooperative models where people can work with their own data and receive compensation for it—the future will show just how closely the analog and digital worlds will merge. But when I see how watches are becoming smarter and smarter and how we no longer distinguish between online and offline, it will likely happen faster than we’d like.
