Beware of ChatGPT phishing: new emails with false information are circulating.

An email with the ChatGPT logo, an invoice, and a large green button often looks suspicious today.

An email featuring the ChatGPT logo, an invoice, and a large green button often seems more credible today than a poorly executed scam. That’s exactly what makes it dangerous.

It might say, „Your payment failed,“ or „Your ChatGPT account will be suspended in 48 hours.“ This is followed by a button such as „Update payment information.“.

The goal is simple: to scare you into clicking quickly and entering your password.

Is this phishing or a scam?

Both.

A Scam is fraud. Phishing is a specific type of scam: Criminals send messages that appear to come from a well-known company. Their goal is to steal passwords, credit card information, or personal details.

This scam misuses the name ChatGPT. The email looks as if it came from OpenAI. However, the link leads to a fake website. Anyone who enters their password there is handing it over to the scammers.

How can I tell if an email is fake?

Don't focus on the attractive design right away. Look at these three things:

1. The sender

The name might be „ChatGPT“ or „OpenAI Support.“ What’s important, though, is the address behind it.

A real company has a proper web address. An address like support@9527db6e1a.nxcli.io is not part of OpenAI.

2. The Threat

„Final warning,“ „Act now,“ or „Your account will be suspended“ are meant to cause stress. Scammers know that when people are stressed, they’re less likely to double-check things.

3. The link

Don't click the button. Instead, open ChatGPT yourself using your bookmark or type chatgpt.com directly into the browser. If there really is an outstanding payment, you'll find the information there.

What You Can Do Right Away

If you receive an email like this:

  • Do not click.
  • Do not reply.
  • Delete the email or mark it as phishing.
  • If you're unsure, ask someone you trust.
  • Only open ChatGPT through the well-known website or the official app.

If you've already clicked the link and entered a password:

  • Change your ChatGPT password right away.
  • Use a new password that you don't use anywhere else.
  • Sign out on all devices.
  • Enable two-factor authentication.
  • If you entered a credit card, contact your bank.

OpenAI also recommends the following in the event of suspicious activity: Change your password, log out of all sessions, and report the incident through the official reporting channel. OpenAI Help Center

Why now, of all times?

For many people today, ChatGPT is part of everyday life—whether for writing, asking questions, work, school, or as a tool to help with family life. That’s exactly why the name is attracting the attention of scammers.

ChatGPT has become one of the brands that are increasingly being misused for phishing. That doesn't mean ChatGPT itself is insecure. It means that the more familiar a service becomes, the more carefully we need to look when someone makes a request of us in its name. Help Net Security

The most important rule is simple: No bill or warning is so urgent that you can't take two minutes to check it first.
