Artificial intelligence: today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow

We all know it: we sit comfortably on the couch, our smartphone in our hand. We look at it, it unlocks. We type in a few numbers and immediately we have the result of a complex calculation. We swipe once across the display and have light while the display darkens. We speak a simple voice message and it is instantly converted into written text. All of this sounds simple and obvious, right? But did you know that some of the most complex and ingenious ideas in modern technology are actually machine learning?

It is precisely these wonders of everyday technology that open the door to an even more fascinating world, the world of artificial intelligence (AI). But what is AI actually?

Artificial intelligence can be broadly defined as a set of algorithms and models that enable machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. This can range from relatively simple things like recognizing patterns in data to more complex tasks like conducting conversations, understanding natural language, or even predicting future events.

An important component of AI is so-called machine learning. This is a method in which computers are not only programmed to perform specific tasks, but they also “learn” from the data they work with. They recognize patterns, make connections, and improve on their own over time the more data they process.

So-called deep learning, a special form of machine learning, goes one step further. Deep learning uses artificial neural networks – a type of replica of the human brain structure – to recognize even more complex patterns in huge amounts of data and make predictions or decisions.

But what does all of this have to do with our smartphones? Well, the lighting, calculators, and voice recognition we use on our smartphones are simple examples of applications of AI. They demonstrate how deeply rooted AI already is in our everyday lives – and that’s just the beginning. Soon AI will be our constant companion, always there to help us organize and improve our lives.

Let’s dive into this fascinating world of AI together and discover how it will change our world – how it is already changing our world. From improving our daily efficiency and productivity to tackling global challenges, from streaming platforms and navigation systems to medical diagnostics and climate predictions.

But we also need to confront the challenges posed by these advanced technologies and ask ourselves whether they are really as “smart” as they seem. We need to understand the limitations of AI and address the ethical questions its use raises. And above all, we must have the courage to break new ground and seek ever better solutions. Because – “The real progress lies not in making machines more intelligent, but in empowering people to achieve more.” -Roger Basler de Roca.
